Tieke, saddleback (Philesturnus carunculatus), A4 fine art reproduction

Tīeke, jackbird, juv. South Island saddleback (Philesturnus carunculatus),
Tīeke, North Island saddleback (Philesturnus rufusater), pair

The tīeke belongs to the wattle bird family Callaeidae, only found in Aotearoa New Zealand. Other Callaeidae include both the North & South Island species of kōkako, blue-wattled crow (Callaeas wilsoni and C. cinerea respectively) & huia (Heteralocha acutirostris). In the 1960s it was thought the SI tīeke would suffer the fate of its cousins the huia & the SI Kōkako (considered extinct) when ship rats were accidentally introduced to their predator free island homes. A dramatic rescue saved the SI tīeke from inevitable extinction. The surviving 36 birds were translocated from which the 700 birds which make up their population today have all descended.
